Many people believe they have total free will but the truth is, we are all very chained to particular decisions based on our personalities/genes/backgrounds/etc.etc.etc. Therefore, what really matters is the rare ability to break out from what we are comfortable with in terms of decision making and to do what we would not normally do. Then can TRUE change be brought about. You can claim to have all the "free will" in the world, but you won't be truly free until you learn to break out from your false/comfortable/outer self.
Perhaps I will write about freedom in my next post.
As Wonmin says: "On a side note..." I think you should watch the film "Poetry" by director Lee Chang Dong.
Don't copy my side note!
ReplyDeleteAccording to your definition, almost nobody except the history-makers, revolutionists, and rebels have "free-will."
The idea that "free-will" requires a conscious effort to move outside one's comfort zone is incredibly intriguing to me, but could be frightful to slothful people.
Basically everyone is a slave to their own upbringings and to break free of one's own past is the only way to be "free?"
Of course, after you break "free" you are bound by new backgrounds and social norms. It sounds like a never ending cycle.
yea i see what you're saying, but i think there's a point at which one can cease that cycle of following what's comfortable and just do what is simply best. and i think not just the notable "rebellious" ppl are truly free but also just thoughtful and ambitious ppl who want to live life the best and actually engage in trying to fulfill that type of life are much more free than others as well. not sure if that made sense.
